Tips to Make Your Move Easier
Moving doesn't have to be stressful. Use these tips to stay organized, save money, and make moving day go smoothly.
What We've Learned From Hundreds of Moves
Our crew has seen it all. Here's what actually makes a difference on moving day.
Book Early — Especially in Summer
May through September is our busiest season. Book at least 3–4 weeks in advance for a local move, and 4–6 weeks for long-distance. Last-minute moves are possible, but you'll have more date options if you plan ahead.
Declutter Before You Pack
The less you move, the less you pay. Go through every room and donate, sell, or throw away anything you don't need. Less stuff means a faster move and a lower bill — it's that simple.
Label Every Box — Top and Sides
Write the room name and a quick description on every box. Label the top and at least two sides so you can read it even when boxes are stacked. Color-coding by room makes unpacking even faster.
Pack a "First Night" Box
Put everything you'll need for the first 24 hours in one clearly labeled box: toilet paper, phone charger, basic kitchen items, a change of clothes, medications, and anything you'll need right away. Keep this box separate and load it last so it comes off first.
Take Photos of Electronics Before Disassembly
Before you unplug your TV setup, entertainment system, or desk computer — take a photo of all the cable connections. You'll thank yourself when it's time to set it all back up.
Tell Us About Access Issues Upfront
Stairs, tight hallways, a long driveway, a small elevator, or limited street parking — let us know when you get your estimate. We plan better and bring the right equipment when we know what to expect.
Change Your Address Early
Update your address with USPS, your bank, employer, insurance providers, subscriptions, and the DMV before moving day. It takes longer than you think and delays are frustrating. Start at least 2 weeks before your move.
Keep Kids and Pets Somewhere Safe
Moving day is chaotic. Arrange for kids and pets to stay with family or a sitter during the move itself. It keeps them safe, keeps your crew focused, and makes everything go faster.
Let Us Handle the Hard Part
Following these tips makes your move smoother — but the best tip of all is to hire a crew that handles the packing, loading, and unpacking for you.
Full packing is included with every YouMove job at no extra labor cost.
